Spiti is not a casual weekend extension. High altitude, remote roads and limited medical access demand conservative planning. The reward is a thoughtful journey through monasteries, villages and stark Himalayan landscapes.
Suggested planning framework
Days 1–2 — Gradual approach
Approach through a route and overnight pattern that supports acclimatisation. Hydrate, rest and avoid strenuous activity on arrival. Anyone with concerning symptoms must descend and seek medical attention.
Days 3–4 — Tabo and Dhankar sector
Visit monastery complexes with local interpretation and time for quiet observation. Road conditions decide whether all proposed stops are sensible.
Days 5–7 — Kaza base and nearby villages
Use one base for selected day trips, village-hosted meals and a monastery visit. Keep one buffer day for weather, rest or route changes. Community visits should be agreed in advance and fairly compensated.
Day 8 — Begin return
Treat the final day as the start of the descent, not a guaranteed connection to a distant flight.
Safety comes first
- Seek medical advice about altitude and fitness.
- Carry adequate warm layers, water and personal medication.
- Travel with an experienced mountain driver and emergency plan.
- Check permits and road status locally.
- Never hide symptoms to keep the itinerary on schedule.
