Sikkim’s monastery journeys unfold across mountain roads where weather controls the day. This plan favours fewer bases, smaller groups and time to observe living traditions without intruding.
Suggested itinerary
Days 1–2 — Gangtok
Arrive gradually and use the first day to rest. On day two, visit a monastery or institute where visitors are permitted, taking guidance on prayer halls, shoes and photography.
Day 3 — Rumtek area
Travel with current local access information. Spend time learning about artistic and monastic traditions instead of treating the visit as a photo stop.
Days 4–6 — Pelling and western Sikkim
Move to a second base and explore selected monasteries and viewpoints over two full days. Road conditions may require substitutions. Keep one half-day unplanned for weather or quiet reflection.
Day 7 — Departure
Return to the gateway with a substantial time buffer. Do not pair a long mountain descent with a tightly timed flight.
Mountain planning essentials
- Verify permits and identity-document requirements.
- Avoid adding high-altitude excursions without acclimatisation.
- Expect road and weather changes.
- Carry layers and personal medicines.
- Use local guides who understand monastery etiquette.
