The Char Dham journey is physically demanding and highly seasonal. Altitude, mountain roads, weather and crowd conditions can change quickly. Twelve days is a planning minimum for many groups; health and safety must decide the final route.
Suggested planning framework
Days 1–3 — Gateway and Yamunotri sector
Begin from Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun and move gradually into the hills. Keep a buffer before the Yamunotri approach. The walking route is not suitable for everyone; assess mobility support early and use only authorised services.
Days 4–5 — Gangotri sector
Travel in daylight, pause for acclimatisation and keep the temple day otherwise light. Headache, nausea or unusual fatigue at altitude must be taken seriously.
Days 6–9 — Kedarnath sector
Allow multiple days for access, weather disruption and recovery. Registration, transport controls and walking conditions should be rechecked immediately before movement. Do not promise a fixed timetable where mountain conditions control access.
Days 10–11 — Badrinath sector
Continue only if the group is rested and conditions are suitable. Use one day for the main visit and one for contingency or nearby stops.
Day 12 — Return
Descend with realistic road time and avoid a same-day flight connection after a long mountain transfer.
Non-negotiable preparation
- Obtain appropriate medical advice before committing.
- Complete any official registration and carry identity documents.
- Build weather days into transport and accommodation arrangements.
- Confirm insurance scope, emergency contacts and cancellation terms.
- Avoid single-use plastic and follow local waste rules.
Official context and further reading
Use only current Uttarakhand government registration, weather and route information when the yatra season opens. The Ministry of Tourism’s schemes portal explains destination-development support, but it is not a journey permit or booking channel. NFTCI will propose this route only after seasonal access and group suitability are reviewed.
